What Are Crowns And Bridges?

Crowns and bridges are a long-lasting, low-maintenance way of bringing back your natural smile. Unlike removable devices such as dentures, dental crowns and bridges are permanently attached onto teeth or implants.

• Crowns

A crown is used on an individual tooth to strengthen and protect a damaged or fractured root structure. It can also be used to improve its appearance, shape or alignment. A crown is generally made of porcelain, ceramic, a metallic alloy or a combination  that can be coloured and textured to match to your existing teeth.

• Bridges

A bridge can be used when one or more teeth are missing. We can advise you on the best bridge solution for your situation. For example, we may use a resin-bonded bridge to replace a single missing tooth, a  conventional 3-unit bridge to replace one tooth. Implant-supported bridges can replace an entire arch of teeth!

What Is The Treatment Process?

Your Prosthodontist will first assess whether your teeth are suitable for crowns or bridges and if a post or core restoration is required before your crown or bridge can be permanently attached.

After any necessary tooth restoration is complete, we will take shade matching photographs and an impression of the prepared tooth/teeth and your crown or bridge will be constructed using refined processes in a dental laboratory under the supervision of a dental technican/ceramist. Provisional crowns/bridges may be required between appointments. Throughout the process, your Prosthodontist will keep you informed and ensure that you receive the highest quality of care.

The final step is to fit your crown or bridge. At this stage, our Brisbane crown and bridge specialist will check if the dimensions, appearance and bite are correct. Crowns and bridges are then cemented with high quality, biocompatible cements to ensure they maintain their function over time.

Do I Need Crowns Or Bridges?

If your tooth is broken down, restoration with a crown may increase the lifespan of the tooth and improve its appearance. If you are missing teeth and the adjacent teeth have pre-existing restorations, bridges may be suitable to replace the missing teeth.

However, not every tooth requires a crown (even if it has had root canal treatment) and not every missing tooth should be replaced with a bridge. Before commencing any irreversible crown and bridge work, we will thoroughly and comprehensively assess whether a crown or bridge is the most suitable option for you, or whether onlays or dental implants are better in your situation.
